The Associated Press reports that Moore died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center where he had been admitted because of complications arising from the accident, which took place weeks earlier. Moore had been receiving physical therapy in Los Angeles.

The report continues by saying that Moore and DMB drummer Carter Beauford were involved in Charlottesville’s jazz scene before joining Matthews in 1991 in what has since become one of the most successful bands of the era.

According to the Dave Matthews Band Web site, Moore was a classically trained musician but found his playing more informed by jazz.

“Jazz is probably my main influence but at this stage I don’t really consider myself a jazz musician,” Moore says in the Site’s biography. “[In DMB] I have plenty of space to improvise, to try new ideas. It’s almost better than a jazz gig.”
