Variety reports that in celebration of its 40th anniversary, Warner Bros. will release a new version of the Oscar-winning documentary Woodstock Director’s Cut featuring an hour of previously unknown footage. The report goes on to say that the studio discovered approximately eight hours of footage in a Kansas City, MO, storage facility. Performances by The Who, Joe Cocker, and Joan Baez will be added to the documentary. However, the “discovered” footage also includes performances from Jimi Hendrix and other artists, but the studio has been unable to obtain the rights to feature the material on the documentary.
The report notes that original documentary’s director Michael Wadleigh and editor Eddie Kramer will oversee the inclusion of the new material.
The documentary, according to an editorial review on amazon.com, contains not only concert footage but also presents a glimpse into the unique cultural experience of the 1969 Upstate New York event including everything from “skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, mid-concert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants.”
The film will be released sometime next year; the original director’s cut (sans newly-found footage) was recently reissued.
